TOPIC 1 : GETTING READY TO LEARN

1.1  ICE BREAKING SESSION

The ice breaking session was conducted by Madam Adriana. The purpose of our ice breaking session is for the students to comfortably interact with each other, so that the students are fond with their classmates for the whole semester. In this session, we were divided into groups and do activities like making taglines for ourselves and make a song lyrics out of each student's personal hobbies.

1.2  LEARNING STYLE INVENTORY

Learning style inventories are basically designed to help students find their most prefered way to learn. The students in my class are given a sheet of paper filled with questions so that they can choose answers that most closely resemble their preferences.

We were separated into groups of different learning styles which is Visual, Auditory and Kinesthetic. I was one of the Visual type of learners. Let me tell you about the characteristic for each of the learning styles we are grouped into.

  • Visual learners are the type of students that prefer to see the information or visualized by studying through diagrams, pictures, mind maps and videos. People like me can easily remember what we learn by imagining in our mind.

  • Auditory learners are usually students that have a very good sense of hearing or as we called it 'good ear'. They can easily remember the things lecturer says in classes. Also, by repeating the words they hear also can help them learn cause their good ears will likely hear the same thing twice to make it easy to remember.

  • Kinesthetic learners are basically a hands-on learner. They will learn very quickly by doing the task practically.

HOW TO STUDY?

Here is some of my personal learning style plan to study for classes :)

  1. Do mind maps with lots diagrams and pictures
  2. Draw a diagram related to the topic and write important keywords.
  3. Write notes using colorful pens.
  4. Compact the notes consisting keywords and make it into a flash cards.
  5. Record the what the lecturer says and rehear it when I study.
  6. Teach another students about a topic that had been studied and covered.

1.3  CHARACTERISTIC OF SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS

  • Attend and participate in all classes and activities that are held.
  • Study or have an overview of the topic for the next class.
  • Make a good plan of time management.
  • Have a strong bond with the lecturers and other students.
  • Submit all assignments on time.
  • Set goals.

TOPIC 2 : GOAL SETTING !

2.1  CHARACTERISTIC OF GOAL (SMART)

S (Specific) - What do you REALLY want?
M (Measurable) - How will you know when you reach it?
A (Achievable) - Is it in your power to accomplish it?
R (Relevant) - Can you realistically achieve it?
T (Timely) - When exactly do you want to accomplish it?

2.2  GOAL STATEMENT

"I WANT TO GET A DEAN LIST IN EVERY SEMESTER"

HOW TO ACHIEVE IT?

  • Study in groups.
  • Ask the lecturer immediately if I don't understand.
  • Do a prior reading and studying of the topic for the next class.
  • Jot down notes and key points in class.
  • Focus 100 percent on what the lecturer talk and explain.

2.3  LEARNING MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (LMS)

Based on Wikipedia, Learning Management System is a new concept directly from e-Learning which encouraged distance education. For an easy understanding, LMS is a way for lecturers or teachers to deliver students note, assignments, tests and so many more. This system is use online.

As an Uitm students, we also were given this type of learning system which the campus provide us website named i-Learn that help lecturers share notes or slide share there for us students to download.
For Uitm students, you can click the link here to log in i-Learn; http://i-learn.uitm.edu.my/v3/login or you can

  • Log in to student portal
  • Click on i-Learn link in the student portal website

TOPIC 3 : TIME MANAGEMENT

3.1  PURPOSE OF TIME MANAGEMENT

Time management means organizing our time efficiently. If we can manage our time properly, it helps us to be more discipline for the time being and for the future. Mainly, time management enable people to get more and better work done in a less time. Also with time management, one becomes more organized and the work done is more effective.

3.2  FIXED COMMITMENT CALENDAR

3.3  DESIGNATING PRIORTIES

Designating priorities taught us to be more precise in finishing our tasks. We need to learn how to categorized tasks that is prior than the other so that our work can be done smoothly.

In this session, Madam Adriana taught us using only the slides. She showed us some questions on the slide and ask us to answer it by categorizing all the task listed on the slide share using words like IMPORTANT, ROUTINE, ASAP (as soon as possible), RUSH and URGENT. Using these words, we can define which task that need to been done first. This method helps us to work properly with good timing.

3.3  JOB TASK ANALYSIS

3.4  PRIORITIZED TASK LIST

TOPIC 5 : MEMORY, LEARNING & IMPROVING CONCENTRATION

5.1 MEMORY PROCESS

Memory is the ability to encode, store and recall information. There's three different types of memory, which is sensory memory, short-term memory and long-term memory. Also, three process were involved in memory: encoding, storage and retrieval. In this topic we will learn more about how to store and retrieve information in an effective way so that we know why some study strategies work and some don't.

5.2  MEMORY STRATEGIES

MY OWN MEMORY STRATEGIES
  • Write it down on sticky notes
  • Visualization; create silly images
  • Categorization
  • Repitition; reading, writing and saying information over and over

5.3  CONCENTRATION STRATEGIES

While we were learning about this topic, Madam Adriana make an activity for us to test our concentration. We played 'bola beracun' which requires the students in the class to pass a pencil box containing some papers that have proverbs in Malay. While we were passing there will be a song playing. If the song stops, the person holds the pencil box will take a paper out of it and act out the clue for the other students to guess the answer.

Here's a video of one of my classmates, Azwa, acting out the proverb :

We also answered some questions about out concentration on a paper Madam Adriana gave,

Madam also gave us a piece of paper and ask us to give suggestion on how to concentrate in class.

5.4  SQ3R

SQ3R is a reading comprehension method named for its five steps: survey, question, read, recite, and review.

TOPIC 6 : TAKING LECTURER NOTES

6.1  WHY TAKE LECTURE NOTES?

It will act as your permanent record that will help you to learn and remember it later after class. If you have the chance to jot down lecture notes, it will be very helpful as it may contain info that is not available anywhere else. It also helps you to activate your listening skill.

Here's some question that Madam Adriana gave during the lesson for this topic;

6.2  CORNELL METHOD

Madam gave a lecture about an Overview of The Accounting Cycle and told us to jot down notes using cornell method. Here's my note for the lecture;

6.3  STRATEGIES ON WRITING LECTURE NOTES

  • Read the topic before the lecture starts
  • Have an overview of the background of the topic so that we have an idea of what the lecture is about
  • Sit in the first row in the classroom
  • Sit in the line of the lecturer's vision
  • Focus physically and mentally

TOPIC 7 : ACADEMIC INTEGRITY & PERFORMANCE

7.1  PLAGIARISM

Based on Wikipedia, plagiarism is an act of 'stealing and publication' on another authors languages, thoughts, ideas or expressions and the representation of them as one's own original work. In easy way to understand, basically plagiarism is like you took someone's works and ideas without their permission and take the credit to yourself. Therefore, DO NOT take someone's work and make it your own, look at other's work as references but do it yourself, be original :)

7.2  CALCULATING GPA AND CGPA

CGPA(Cumulative Grade Point Average): cumulative aggregation of GPA of all semesters you've studied

GPA: Divide the total points by the total credits taken to obtain your semestergrade point average.

Here's a link for an example on how to calculate GPA and CGPA: https://www.mtholyoke.edu/sites/default/files/registrar/docs/calculate_gpa.pdf

7.3  PLAN OF STUDY
